MARGAO: Sao Jose de Areal village on Saturday showed the way as the panchayat kicked off its month-long survey to create a data based on the number of tenants putting up in the village and the provision put in place by the owners for sanitation and garbage disposal.
While the Panchaat members noted details on the owner’s name and details such as house number, number of rooms leased on rent, the provision for sanitation and garbage disposal, the police went about filling up the stranger roll forms of outsiders staying in the village.

The exercise got underway in Mugalli ward represented by Sarpanch Julio Monteiro as Panchayat and members of the ward development committee along with the Maina Curtorim police went house-to-house to compile the details.
Preliminary reports indicated that the most of the tenants have not filled up the stranger rolls. It has also come to light that most of the houses have leased out small rooms for tenants.
Says Areal Sarpanch Julio Monteiro: “The purpose behind the survey is to ensure cleanliness and sanitation. The Village is facing a problem on sanitation. Neighbours are complaining of garbage disposal because of rooms leased out on rent”.
Moreover, he said the Panchayat have no record of the number of tenants staying on rent and their antecedents. “We intend to create a data base as to how many rooms are given on rent and the antecedents of the tenants”, Monteiro added.
Aware that the ongoing exercise is cumbersome, involving door-to-door visits, the Sarpanch exuded confidence of completing the survey within a month’s time.
The team issued notices on houses which were found closed during the survey, with a request to the owner to contact the village Panchayat office within eight days for furnishing the required details.
The Sarpanch has appealed to the house owners to cooperate with the village Panchayat for smooth conduct of the survey in the interest of the village. The Panchayat have also requested the house and flat owners, who are staying outside the village, but have given their premises on rent to cooperate with the village by providing necessary information.
