MARGAO: The Goa Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, BRC, Salcete in collaboration with the Goa Panchayat Mahila Shakti Abhiyan will hold a sensitization-cum-community mobilization workshop on   Child Abuse at Don Bosco Animation Centre, Benaulim on March 25 at 3.30 pm. Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco has been invited as the chief guest, and Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva as the guest of honour. The function will be presided over by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Project Director, Farrel Furtado e Gracias, while South Goa ZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues and Benaulim ZP member Maria Rebello have been invited as special invitees.
 

MARGAO: Salcete Truck Owners are up in arms over the government decision not to consider them for the financial package being worked out for mining trucks in the mining belt. A delegation of Salcete Truck Owners Association led by president Franky Gomes called on Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar at the Ravindra Bhavan here on Sunday and briefed him over the plight of the mining truck owners hailing from Salcete taluka. He pointed out that around 80 truck owners from Salcete are facing the same plight like their counterparts from Sanvordem or other mining belts across the State, while making an impassioned plea to the Chief Minister to consider them as well for the financial package. The Chief Minister appeared non-committal as he made no promise on the demand raised by the Salcete Truck owners association. When Franky pointed out that truck owners have no where to go with mining, stone and rubble quarrying, besides sand extraction business coming to a standstill, Parrikar said the sand transportation will soon commence from Karwar. “We fail to understand why the government is discriminating against truck owners from Salcete. We were also engaged in the mining transportation. We are surprised over the yardstick employed by the government by working out the financial package only for trucks from the mining belt”, Franky told newsmen.
 

MARGAO: The long pending issue to have a football play ground in Guirdolim village turned into a reality as the Barboza family agreed to gift 15,000 sq mts of property situated between Antui and Mollar to the village panchayat for development. Guirdolim village sarpanch Milagres Fernandes alias Milagres de Chandor, who had taken over the reigns of the panchayat one and half months back said it was his dream to turn the aspirations of local youth in reality, with resolution been taken at the special gram sabha  held on Sunday to construct the ground.
 

MARGAO: Even as the villages of Raia and Rachol are vehemently opposed to the Shiroda-Rachol Bridge over River Zuari,  Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar tried to push the proposal by allaying apprehensions of the villagers at the Ravindra Bhavan here on Sunday. When a delegation from Raia led by Sarpanch Rumaldo Gonsalves and Panch members came to meet the Chief Minister to depute a full-time panchayat secretary, Parrikar raked up the bridge issue, allaying apprehensions that heavy truck traffic can be banned from plying over the proposed bridge. “If you have apprehensions that the bridge will only invited heavy trucks, we can ban them by erecting railings on both sides of the bridge. The bridge can be notified for use of only two-wheelers and light vehicles”, the Chief Minister tried to allay apprehensions of the Raia delegation. Panch member, Xavier Fernandes later told Herald that the delegation had gone to meet the Chief Minister regarding developmental matters  and to post a full-time panchayat secretary when Parrikar raised the issue over the bridge.
 

MARGAO: The Maina Curtorim  police on Sunday registered a case against a husband for an attempt to murder his wife at Nessai. Police informed that the accused Chandrasekar Parbalammaniyadha, (26), a native of Davangere-Karnataka had tied the knot with Saraswati, (19), a year back against the inter-caste marriage. Accused Parbalammaniyadha who is presently absconding  on Saturday is said to have asked his wife to accompany him  to Margao on pretext to watch a film and arrived by  train  at KRC railway station at 5 am on Sunday. After their arrival at  Margao, the husband asked the wife to accompany him to  see/visit his friend at Nessai. As they were walking towards Nessai, the accused is alleged to have tried to kill his wife by strangulating her with a dupatta when on reaching a lonely spot near a hill. Assuming Saraswati to be dead after being strangulated and unconscious, the accused vanished, taking her mangalsutra and ornaments. Later, when the victim regained consciousness,  she narrated the incident to the locals who informed the police. A case of attempt to murder under Section 307 has been registered against Parbalammaniyadha who is absconding.
