PANJIM: Corporation of the City of Panjim Saturday sacked around 330 of its striking daily wage workers and resolved to tender out the garbage collection, by dividing the work into 8 compartments or packages. The CCP also sanctioned the hiring of over 125 labour for one month, which could be extended for another month, till the tendering process is complete.
After the emergency meeting attended by all corporators, Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues who himself went out with the trucks on the second day said that there were 65 workers on the job at present and as he was short of heavy vehicle drivers, he had got Kadamba Transport drivers to drive CCP’s heavy vehicles.
“We are getting total cooperation from the police. There have been some efforts at intimidation. But the police have been very helpful,” he said, adding now that he had obtained both the administrative as well as financial sanction, the tendering process would start immediately.
“We will also hire temporary workers for a month or so to tide over the present crisis,” he said.
Rodrigues said that the packages would be tendered out separately and one contractor would not be given more than two packages.
“The workers’ job would be only to collect garbage. The trucks, drivers and the maintenance would be ours,” he said adding that they had already received applications from drivers.
“The corporation will have to spend Rs 5 crore. But the tenders will be for three years,” he said.
KTC assn wants its drivers back
PANJIM: Kadamba Transport Corporation Drivers and Allied Employees Association have asked the KTC managing director to recall all the drivers and other staff deputed to the CCP.
In its letter to the management, the union has said the management would be singularly and collectively responsible if there should be any harm or loss of limb or any untoward incident takes place or any bodily or mental harm is caused to KTCL employees.
It has argued that that the deployment of KTC staffers like drivers was “illegal and unjustified.”
