Aspiration for fame lands man in police custody

PANJIM: Aspiration to become famous led a Maharashtra native to sound a terrorist alarm by making a fake call to the Goa police. Instead what it did was, land him in jail. The youth’s call informing that ‘a 26/11 terrorist in Goa’ triggered panic among the Goa Police force with Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) summoned to trace the caller and probe the apparent tip-off.

The call, however, turned out to be hoax, after the ATS detained the ‘drunken’ caller, who confessed he wanted to become famous. Sources said the Maharashtra native, working on daily wages in Goa, was in an inebriated condition when he called up the control room informing that one of the 26/11 accused was in Goa.
“We tracked the mobile phone number with which the youth had called the control room. He was picked up from the Panjim bus stand and brought to the police station,” an officer said, adding, “He confessed that he wanted to grab media attention by providing such sensational news.”
The person was kept in custody till late Monday evening while the ATS has contacted its counterparts in the neighbouring State to get his details.
