MAPUSA: The residents of Assagao and social activists on Thursday protested the alleged illegal felling of trees in a private property opposite to St Cajetan Church for a residential project.

The protesters gheraoed the property owner and questioned whether he had obtained the required permission from concerned departments.
The protesters alleged that the owner had illegally felled around 200 trees.
“Uncontrolled constructions are coming up in the village. Builders are buying land and then cutting down the trees to clear the land. There are several such projects that are coming up in Assagao in total contravention of the law,” they claimed.
The protesters informed that there were over 200 trees in the property, which have been allegedly felled by the owner and added that when they asked the owner whether he obtained the required permissions, they learnt that the permission has been obtained to cut only 47 trees however almost 200 trees have been felled.
They claimed that such construction activities in the village are destroying the environment which should be stopped.
