MARGAO: At a special Gram Sabha held on Sunday, the Assolna village panchayat pledged to protect its traditional water bodies, which hold significant ecological, cultural, and agricultural value.

Chaired by Sarpanch Ivon Fernandes, the meeting drew a large turnout of farmers and villagers concerned about the deteriorating state of three key water bodies: Patches Bhand/Torrem (Survey No. 82), Moddorachea Torrem (Survey No. 99), and Maxine Haind (Survey No. 117). Resolutions were passed to ensure their protection and sustainable use.
Heronico Fernandes, a local farmer, proposed that these water bodies and their catchment areas be officially recognised as part of the village’s ecological system. She urged the Water Resources Department (WRD) to manage the sluice gates by closing them early in September after the kharif harvest and reopening them in May before the monsoon. She also highlighted the neglect of embankments and deteriorating nallas, calling for a study involving senior villagers and the biodiversity committee to guide repairs and strengthen embankments.
Villager Sunny Dias stressed the vital role of these water bodies in irrigation, groundwater recharge, and biodiversity support, noting their importance for maintaining well water levels and providing breeding grounds for migratory birds.
The Gram Sabha members underscored the historical and cultural value of these water bodies, considering them integral to the community’s heritage. To ensure their preservation, a local monitoring committee will be formed, involving senior citizens with traditional knowledge to oversee maintenance efforts.
Additionally, the Gram Sabha resolved to promote sustainable agricultural practices that align with the preservation of these ecological assets.
