At a meeting convened by Atanasio (Babush) Monserratte of the panel, Madkaikar was unanimously declared as the candidate for the post of the mayor and Pascoela as his deputy.
Speaking to Herald, Madkaikar said “The ruling panel has nominated me and I will be filing my nomination for the post of mayor on Wednesday. I am thankful to all the corporators for their trust.”
The elections to the post of mayor and the deputy will be held on Thursday, March 14.
Madkaikar had in 2018 also wanted to contest the election to the Mayor but had withdrawn ahead of the elections in March 2018. Subsequently, Vithal Chopdekar, the current Mayor was nominated by the panel backed by Monserratte to lead the CCP.
Madkaikar has been representing ward number 18 for several terms and Pascoela is a corporator from ward number 17.
Madkaikar has been the market committee chairman for two consecutive years and has been at the forefront of driving large scale changes in the handcart and market vendor policies.
In the CCP, Babush backed panel has 15 corporators, while the BJP backed panel has 13 corporators and former mayor Surendra Furtado and his wife Ruth Furtado have been unattached to any panel. Though, Surendra Furtado had been the mayor with the backing of Babush earlier during this term of the CCP.
The term of the post of Mayor and Deputy is fixed for a year and elections are held annually.
