BICHOLIM: Alert citizens and senior citizens from Bicholim, who undertake regular cleanliness drive in the city, were in for a rude shock when they stumbled upon large quantity of beer bottles near an educational institution and its surrounding.
Senior citizens including ex-Bicholim Municipal Council councillor Narayan Betkikar, Vithal Karmalkar, Shanu Pal and others had carried out cleanliness drive in Bordem near a higher secondary school and a temple. They were surprised to see that there were too many beer bottles in the surrounding area.
“We are carrying out this cleanliness drive in the city for many months and when we took up this drive near a higher secondary school, we were in a shock to find out that more than 50 per cent of it was beer bottles,” Betkikar said.
Next to the higher secondary school there is a ground and people feel that it could be the work of some youth or migrants.
“We know that it might not be the work of the students but it is a grave thing that such activities are happening near an educational institution. We demand that there should be regular police patrolling near the higher secondary school, especially during late in the evening so that such activities are avoided,” Betkikar stated.
“We were greatly shocked to see this here and it only proves that the authorities including BMC and police do not have check on this,” Karmalkar, another senior citizen said.
Following the revelation, the senior citizens have demanded for police patrolling and also proper street lighting near the higher secondary school ground.
