Belgaum cops trying to curb flow of Goan liquor

BELGAUM: In a bid to curb the flow of Goan liquor into Belgaum before and during the Karnataka state elections scheduled on May 5, Belgaum’s Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil has convened a joint meeting with top police officials from Goa and Kolhapur on Friday.

SP Patil is also expected to discuss the issue of inter-state drug trafficking with police officials from Goa. Sources said the meeting will take place in the presence of Charan Redddy, IGP of Northern Range.

SP Patil is keen to check the inflow of Goan liquor to Belgaum that rises sharply during election time. Belgaum alone accounts for 18 MLAs, the largest in Karnataka, which has a total of 224 assembly segments.

Liquor has been playing an important role in luring voters and candidates have already commenced stocking Goan liquor, which is significantly cheaper than in Karnataka.

“Though the excise department and police have jointly set up 18 check posts at strategic entry points from Goa to Belgaum district, we would like to share views and information about how the inflow could be controlled,” a senior police official said .
