Belgaum cops wary of Goan booze

BELGAUM: Belgaum SP Sandeep Patil has sought cooperation from Goa and Kolhapur to control inflow of Goan liquor to Belgaum.

SP Patil was speaking at a meeting of senior police officials at Belgaum on Friday, where issues related to illicit liquor trade between Belgaum and Goa, interstate dacoities and other criminal activities were discussed.

IGP North Karnataka Range Charan Reddy presided over the meeting that was convened by Patil. SPs from Kolhapur, Sangli, Karwar, Bijapur and two DySPs from Goa attended the meeting.

SP Patil stated that the meeting was vital as far as the forthcoming elections to Karnataka assembly were concerned. “Like earlier, we seek whole-hearted cooperation from our counterparts in Goa and Kolhapur in controlling inflow of Goan liquor to Belgaum, which is the root cause of illegal activities especially during the elections,” stated SP Patil.

Patil informed that 17 villages across the Goa-Maharashtra border have been declared as sensitive, while 41 special check posts have been erected by Belgaum police at border points to control inflow of Goa liquor. He urged his counterparts in Goa and Maharashtra to coordinate with Belgaum police at these check posts.

Urging for enhanced cooperation, IGP Charan Reddy said due to rising number of interstate criminal activities, it is important for the police of all the three states to enhance cooperation in exchanging information of criminals and assist each other in investigation of crimes.

DySP Gajanan Prabhudesai and PI Jivba Dalvi, who represented Goa police in the meeting, exchanged vital crime-related information with Belgaum and Kolhapur police.

“Apart from procuring detailed information on the illicit liquor trade and those involved in it, we also exchanged information about unclaimed vehicles, interstate theft and unidentified bodies and have also assured cooperation from Goa police,” DySP Prabhudessai told Herald.
