MARGAO: Benaulim gram sabha members voiced their opposition to the Tourism Department’s proposal to transfer the beach parking lot to a private entity. Concerns were raised over the potential impact on visitors and local businesses, as the space might become unavailable for public use.

At the gram sabha, chaired by Deputy Sarpanch Glyda Rodrigues, gram sabha member Rudolf Barretto questioned whether the panchayat had been consulted regarding the move. He emphasised the importance of keeping the local governing body informed about decisions affecting the community.
Following extensive discussions, it was resolved to convene an extraordinary gram sabha meeting to examine the matter further and decide on future actions.
The gathering also addressed growing worries over proposed multi-dwelling units in the village. The members called for a detailed assessment of Benaulim’s carrying capacity before approving new construction projects. Barretto highlighted the strain such developments could place on infrastructure, including roads, water, and electricity.
The members insisted the panchayat must evaluate whether the village can sustain additional large-scale housing projects without compromising existing resources. A comprehensive study, they argued, is critical to ensure balanced growth while preserving the village’s amenities.
The extraordinary gram sabha meeting is expected to bring more clarity to the parking lot issue and guide future decisions on housing projects.
