MARGAO: Benaulim residents are pinning their hopes on the BRICS summit for better roads in the village.
And the inspection of the road from Dabolim airport to Cavelossim-Mobor via Colva by Chief Secretary R K Srivastava, has also raised hopes among the residents along this route that the condition of the roads in their villages would improve.
After inspecting the BRICS route, Srivastava emphasised on cleanliness and smooth movement of delegates attending the summit scheduled on October 15-16. Around 900 delegates from Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa and India are expected to attend the BRICS summit.
“I have directed the PWD, power department, GSIDC and local bodies to clean the entire route. I have asked the electricity department to shift electric poles obstructing the route; and told the PWD to level the roads. There should not be any garbage strewn on the route,’’ the chief secretary said. All road side encroachments will be removed from the areas, he added.
He was accompanied by South Goa additional collector Ronkon Pereira, officials from various govt departments and local bodies.
Conveying the views of locals, Carmona resident Allwyn George said, “Citizens hope that the BRICS summit makes this road motorable. The Benaulim-Cavellossim road has become a motorist’s nightmare. Indiscriminate digging road for laying water pipes, HT cables and optic fibre cables has made the road a death trap.”
Besides, he lamented, “This road has the unique distinction of having demonic speed breakers of vague specifications.”
