The shores of Benaulim came alive with tradition, learning and gratitude on January 17, 2025, as fisherman leader Pele invited 80 students from Loyola High School, Margao, to experience the age-old Goan practice of pulling a traditional rampon fishing net, turning the beach into a vibrant outdoor classroom.
For Pele, the initiative was far more than a fishing activity. With deep emotion, he described it as his gift to the next generation – a heartfelt effort to ensure that Goa’s traditional way of life, respect for the sea and the spirit of community solidarity are preserved and passed on.

Fr. Anand D’Souza, Headmaster of Loyola High School, strongly supported the hands-on learning experience, highlighting its deep roots in Goan culture, heritage and values. Teachers Ingrid Fernandes and Wilson Fernandes accompanied the students, guiding them through a meaningful day of learning beyond textbooks, with the sand beneath their feet and the rhythm of the waves as their classroom.
The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Shri Octavio A. Rodrigues, Captain of Ports, who inspired the students with his encouraging words and assured them of support for those wishing to pursue careers in the marine and maritime sector, opening new horizons linked to the sea they see every day.
Special appreciation was expressed for Fr. Jimmy, who coordinated the programme with dedication, and Hypatia Media, which designed the event in alignment with the New Education Policy of the Government of India, promoting vocational education and experiential learning.
Adding a powerful environmental dimension, Dr. Hariharan Chandra Shekhar of the Altech Foundation spoke on the value of water and sustainability, urging students to protect every drop and respect nature. Zeeshhan, Head of Hypatia Media, shared that more schools will be invited in the future so that many more students can experience this unique blend of education, tradition and real-world learning on the shores of Benaulim.
On that memorable day, the students did not just pull a fishing net – they gathered stories, values and inspiration that will remain with them for life.
