MARGAO: The Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) has requested urgent action in the alleged land filling in lake at Guirdolim. The people from Chandor and Guridolim had earlier met the Collector to highlight the matter and requesting action.
The Goa State Biodiversity Board is an Autonomous Statutory Body of the Govt of Goa & Nodal Agency, Goa State Wetland Authority (GSWA).
The Member Secretary Pradip Sarmokadam in a letter to the District Collector of South Goa has informed of been apprised via email of ongoing land filling in lake of Guirdolim as per the newspaper report.
“As Member and Head of the GSWA, GSBB requests your intervention to stop the ongoing destruction of a pristine water body. As the matter comes under your jurisdiction, we request you to kindly verify the facts regarding necessary permissions taken and alleged illegalities and take the necessary action” said the letter.
Earlier, AAP had sent the mail to the Goa State Biodiversity Board regarding the wetlands destruction allegedly by Railways at Guirdolim. AAP’s leader on environment Siddharth Karapurkar had visited the site along with some local farmers. He blamed the State government for these kind of assaults on environment, which he added are taking place everywhere as the authorities ‘do not exist for the common man’.
Elsewhere Karapurkar along with AAP’s Nuvem coordinator Ramiro Mascarenhas also raised the issue of the destruction of mangroves and the River Sal stretch at Nuvem without any intimation to the local panchayat. They have questioned the WRD department for not ensuring that an information board as per norms is put up at the site.
