PORVORIM: Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has demanded blacklisting contractors who fail to complete the government allotted works accusing the former of controlling the State run departments.
“There are many contractors taking up the Public Works Department and Water Resources Department works but leave it halfway. It could be because of payment issues but neither the engineers react nor the concerned departments take action against them. It seems as if the contractors are controlling the departments… the development suffers. Such contractors should be blacklisted,” he told the House during a discussion on Tuesday.
The Independent legislator cited example of the incomplete work in the constituency wherein protection wall for the houses along the coastline is abandoned. He went on to add that the Finance Department is responsible for hampering development work as the file placed for clearance bites dust.
Meanwhile, participating in a discussion in demands for grants on Art & Culture, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai alleged that Ravindra Bhavan in Margao is being misused for political meetings rather than public events. He also added that the institution was sponsoring events held in the neighbouring states.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat questioned the delay in completing the work at the Old Secretariat.
On the employment front, the opposition benches charged the government of failing to ensure that Goan youth are given priority in jobs. They also pointed out the ineffective functioning of the Employment Exchange. While Khaunte asked why the workers roped in for beach cleaning were not paid their salaries and shipyard limited hiring non Goans for different portfolios.
