Farmers fear saline water may enter their fields

CHORAO: The anchoring of ferry boats at the Varon-Patramon Khazan Bundh near the Chorao ferry point has reportedly damaged the bundh and farmers fear that saline water could enter their cultivated fields.
According to reports, ferry boats plying along the Chorao-Ribandar ferry route are anchored near the Khazan Bundh, especially at night, thereby causing damage to the bundh.
Sources informed that the bundh was repaired under the supervision of Soil Conservation Department, who had asked the Khazan Land Association to take action in the matter.
At the instruction of the Soil Conservation Department, the Khazan Association had requested the River Navigation Department not to anchor ferry boats, but their pleas fell of deaf ears.
At a recent general meeting of Varon-Patramon Khazan Association, farmers had raised the issue and decided to inspect the site when ferry boats are anchored near the Bundh.
“If after repeated requests the department fails to carry out the repair work, we will send a legal notice to the RND to compensate for the damage caused,” warned Khazan Association Chairman Ganesh Govenkar.
When asked to justify the need to anchor the ferry boats near the bundh, the ferry crew said there was no other alternative to anchor the boats, especially at night.
“We had complained in this regard, but nothing has been done so far. Hence, we are forced to anchor the ferry boats near the bundh,” said a crew member.
When contacted, RND in-charge Vikram Sing Bhosle confirmed that the department had received a complaint from the association and assured that the repair work would be undertaken soon.
