MARGAO: Now, the village panchayats of Cana-Benaulim and Ambelim have unanimously opposed the proposed Sunburn Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival, extending their objection beyond just the South district to encompass the entire State of Goa.
This unified stance reflects widespread community concerns about potential social impact, and the overall suitability of hosting such events in Goa. The villagers of both the village panchayats have resolved to vehemently oppose the Sunburn festival and are prepared to take to the streets in protest.
It is noteworthy that the day before, numerous citizens from both South and North Goa districts gathered for a protest rally outside the South Goa District Collectorate Complex, voicing their opposition to the hosting of the Sunburn festival in South Goa. The participants emphasised that they joined forces as concerned citizens and that the rally was not aligned with any political affiliations.
On Sunday, villagers of Benaulim in a one voice expressed their objections in holding the proposed Sunburn EDM in South.
Agnelo Fernandes, a villager of Benaulim, claimed that the proposed Sunburn Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival is closely associated with drug-related activities.
“Such an event will undoubtedly lead to the destruction of our youth, who represent the future of our nation. Our opposition to Sunburn extends beyond just South Goa; we firmly believe it should not be held anywhere in the State of Goa,” stated Fernandes.
Rudolf Barreto, another concerned citizen, also voiced his objections to hosting the Sunburn Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival in the South district of Goa. His stance aligns with broader community sentiments regarding potential disruptions and negative impacts associated with large-scale music festivals.
At the gram sabha of the village panchayat Ambelim, a significant number of villagers participated in the meeting and unanimously resolved to oppose the Sunburn EDM festival in the South District of Goa.
“All villagers, along with the panchayat body and prominent people from the village, in one voice opposed the Sunburn festival in the South district,” stated Anthony D’Silva, a social activist from Ambelim.
He further stated that the past history and data of the organizer is very concerning and problematic, marked by controversies and a disregard for legal judgments.
“The Court had previously directed that the organizers should obtain all necessary permissions at least 15 days prior to the event, but it has been observed that they start the event before acquiring the NOC,” said D’Silva.
He said that it has been found that the event itself is conducive to various anti-social activities, which could harm not only children during the three days of the event but also in the days to come.
Velsao-Pale opposes Sunburn, demands recognition for Konkani in Roman script
VASCO: The Velsao-Pale-Issorcim gram sabha on Sunday passed two resolutions — one opposing the Sunburn electronic dance music (EDM) festival in South Goa and secondly demanded recognition to Konkani in Roman script in the Official Language Act.
The gram sabha members voiced their concerns about the potential disruptions and cultural impact the Sunburn EDM festival event might have on their community. The meeting unanimously passed a resolution strongly opposing the Sunburn event in South Goa scheduled in December this year.
In the second resolution, the gram sabha supported the growing demand for equal status for Konkani in Roman script and to preserve the linguistic heritage.
Panchayat member Jim D’Souza said that the gram sabha members discussed major issues such Sunburn EDM and equal status to Konkani in Roman script. Other issues discussed were solid waste management, l house tax collections and development projects undertaken in the village.
