Canacona: Dumping of garbage and other waste on the roadside on Canacona-Margao is still common in most areas of the road which wind through the otherwise tranquil forests.
Environmentalists’ blame both the authorities and the littering public for lack of will and civic sense.

Local Sandesh Telekar expressed his concerns against this malpractice and the innumerable black spots mostly from Gulem to Balli.
“There are no houses in the vicinity, which is taken advantage of, as garbage is discreetly dumped either from moving cars or two-wheelers” Telekar asserted.
He added that open accumulation of garbage in a specific place leads to increased littering. “People get under the impression that it is the right thing to throw the garbage onto an existing pile of waste,” he said.
Another local Vikas Bhagat added, “Former Chief Minister (late) Manohar Parrikar had the vision to appoint contractors for the clearance of garbage from national highway sides, but today we see these contractors clearing garbage from the shoulder of the road and the other trash is left untouched resulting the waste to finally find itself on the land and forested areas along NH66 from Balli to Polem.”
Goa Waste Management Corporation officials revealed that the contractor appointed by them is supposed to clear garbage from 20 mtrs from either side of the road.
But when told that apart from 3 mtrs, remaining 17 mtrs on either side has a lot trash, they said they will inspect the roadside and take the contractor to task if the garbage is found in that section.
