Canacona too gets its share of shrimps

While mechanised fishing boats are upbeat over large-scale prized catch of solar shrimps on the second day of the new fishing season, it’s no different for locals fishermen, who too commenced the new season on a most promising note with most using the latest fishing craze ‘mini-pursing technology’.
The entire Canacona taluka’s coast may not be favourable for fishing activities at this time of the year, but Palolem’s shallow coast enabled the motor boats to venture into the sea with mini-pursing nets with most returning with large amount of solar shrimps catch.
If sources are to be believed, there are about 50 fibre or other motor boats (paths) which operate mini-pursing nets (these nets are similar to the one used by mechanised fishing trawlers but of smaller size) in Canacona.
On Monday, not a single boat, which ventured into Arabian Sea, had catch of less than 50 carriers.
While one Kir Pagui from Tarir brought above 150 carriers full of solar shrimps, most others returned with about 100 such carriers and still more having a catch of over 50 full carriers.
Sources also informed that the catch was little less on Sunday, when boats ventured out for fishing towards Cabo-de-Rama-Betul coast, but on Monday, almost all fishermen sailed towards Karwar early morning to return with huge catch.
As the word spread of good catch, wholesale purchasers reportedly lined up to purchase solar shrimps, with rates reportedly ranging between Rs 80 and 90 a kg.
Few local buyers too bought solar shrimps at Rs 80 kg with some buying as much as 5 kgs for home consumption, while others settled for 1-2 kgs.
Interestingly, most fishermen expects a better fishing season ahead, giving them healthy returns, while consumers expecting large amount of fish catch prays for cheaper rates reachable for the common man.
