According to Calangute police, they received a call at 5.30 pm on Thursday that one Isabella Cardozo was lying in a pool of blood in her bedroom. On reaching the spot, police said that they found Isabella lying on the floor and blood was oozing out from her nose.
Calangute police then conducted panchama and sent the body for an autopsy, which certified the cause of the death as “Closed head injury in the form of sub-arachnoids haemorrhage with bilateral fracture of the ribs and associated injuries to the lungs in consequent to blunt force impact by some object.”
On investigation, police learnt that a daughter of Isabella is mentally ill, who was then sent to Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (PHB) at Bambolim. Cardozo’s medical history also revealed that she was under treatment for certain disease.
Calangute police have recorded statements of all the family members. Police are further investigating whether the fracture in the ribs is due to sudden fall or otherwise. The death of Isabella Cardozo is registered as case of unnatural death.
However, another daughter of Isabella, namely, Lucy has claimed that her mother’s death is not an accident but a planned murder. Lucy claimed that her mentally-ill sister Monica killed her mother. She further informed that they have some property dispute and in respect of which a case is pending in a Mapusa court. Lucy suspects that her mother was killed to make the matters easy in settling the property dispute.
