VASCO: The illegal opening of road median on NH17-B road near Vales junction in Alto Dabolim was sealed under heavy police protection on Friday morning.
Though the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials had promised to seal the illegal opening of road median at Vales junction by July 2 this year, due to delay in obtaining permission for making a temporary opening of road median near Zuari gate number 3, NHAI officials delayed the work to seal illegal opening of road median at Vales junction. Since the work on temporary opening of road median at Zuari gate completed recently, NHAI officials finally sealed the illegal opening at Vales junction on Friday.
NHAI project director for NH17B road, P S Doddamani said, “Such unauthorized opening of road median should not exist on national highway. As per NHAI norms every two kilometers should have opening for vehicles to take U-Turn however here on NH17-B road residents from Alto Dabolim had punctured road median suiting to their convenience and this stretch of road had become a death trap for commuters with many even losing their lives in accidents. Now with the help of Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho, today we were able to close this illegal opening at Vales junction and we will now ensure that no such openings are allowed on NH17 B road in future.”
Speaking to reporters, Mauvin assured that the pending improvement of Dabolim as well as MES College junction would be completed within 6 month time. He said that both these major junctions on NH17 B road will have roundabout besides traffic signals to curb accidents.
