PANJIM: Four days of carnival festivities kicked off by the merry King Momo ended Tuesday night with traditional dances such as Red and Black dance in Panjim, signalling the beginning of 40 days of Lent.
The prizes for the Carnival floats in various categories were announced Tuesday. The prizes winners in the traditional category were – Lee Dias of St Estevam (first prize) followed by Derick Mendonca of Margao, Raul Pereira of Quepem, Anthony Peixete of Curtorim and Irist D’Silva of Curtorim.
In the sponsored category, Vodafone (Paresh Naik) bagged the first prize, followed by the Real group of companies (Francisco Martins) and Amigo Promotions (Ganpat Mulgaokar).
In the club/institution category, Alleson Barreto of Loutolim won the first prize, followed by Roque Rebello of Calangute, Luis Olveira of Ilha de Rachol and Samson Dias of Sangolda; while in the family category the first prize was won by Melwyn Fernandes of Cortalim, second by Roy Basilio Dias of Fatorda, third prize was won by Snele Gracias of Ponda, fourth prize by Wilda Fernandes from Mapusa and Roy Fernandes from Alto Betim.
This time a total of 92 floats participated in the parade. The sponsored category had seven entries, traditional category eight, clubs/institutions category 20, family category 16, junk car category 22 and clowns category 19 entries.
