PANJIM: Following strong opposition from BJP-backed councilors, the standing committee of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Tuesday decided to revert back to the old pay parking rates, approved by former BJP council. The pay parking in the 18-notified places in the capital city would be implemented from May 1.
The standing committee chaired by Mayor Surendra Furtado met on Tuesday evening, wherein it was decided to revert back to the old pay parking rates, according to which two-wheelers would be charged Rs 4 and four-wheelers would be charged Rs 10 for less than four hours of parking. The rates are against the new proposed rates, wherein two-wheelers had to shell out Rs 10 and four wheelers Rs 20 per the first four hours.
The committee has also resolved that the residents from Panjim, living in old buildings will be given one pass each for car and two-wheeler provided he is a regular house tax payer. No exemption has been given to shopkeepers or commercial establishments.
Addressing media persons after the meeting, Furtado said that following position by some corporators, who are trying to instigate locals, it has been decided to revert back to the old rates approved by the then BJP council chaired by Shubham Chodankar.
“The decision of the standing committee to hike the parking fees was to bring in proper discipline amongst commuters,” Furtado said, adding that the pay parking tender would be awarded to Margao based Straight Deal Services, who had quoted during Chodankar’s tenure.
“I will be signing the work order in the next two days,” the Mayor said announcing that the pay parking would be implemented from May 1 at the 18 places including 18th June road.
As per the rates, two wheelers would be charged Rs 8 for four to 12 hours of parking and Rs 15 for parking above 12 hours but less than 24 hours.
For four-wheelers, Rs 15 would be charged for parking between four hours to 12 hours while above 12 hours but less than 24 hours Rs 20 would be charged.
