The City Corporation announced the agreement signed with ZACL to use the municipal waste produced in the city, towards producing city compost. Under the agreement, CCP would ensure delivery of municipal solid waste to ZACL and review the infrastructure and machinery available at the compost manufacturing location.
CCP will be responsible to process the solid waste and convert it into compost compliant with FCO standards, and properly package the compost. ZACL thereafter will discuss production and off-take schedule with CCP and will ensure 100 percent off-take of compost manufactured by the corporation.
“I welcome the decision to sign the agreement with ZACL and assure that Panjim will be garbage-free in the immediate future. My key aspiration for Panjim is to effectively work out a garbage management system and ensure that this issue is sorted on priority,” Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado said.
The agreement, facilitated by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), comes on the back of the Union Cabinet decision of January 2016 on the promotion of city compost, wherein market development assistance of Rs 1500 per metric tonne of city compost would be paid to the fertilizer marketing companies.
CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues said the agreement signed would ensure feasibility and viability of producing compost. “We are highly committed towards the idea of reusing waste for the betterment of society, and the agreement will ensure increase in the processing of city waste towards the production of city compost,” he said.
The agreement was signed in the presence of S Riyaz, Deputy GM, Marketing, ZACL, D Tendulkar, Chief Manager, ZACL and Anil Prakash, Associate Director, Project Management Unit, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, MoUD, Government of India.
