PANJIM: The Corporation of City of Panjiim (CCP) is set to launch a month-long campaign from January for identifying people littering the capital.
While this being a rather lenient way to tackle the menace as it has identified 15-20 ‘black spots’ where garbage is usually dumped, CCP’s second phase plan is imposing penalty on the irresponsible citizens.
“During the campaign, our personnel will counsel these citizens not to dump any form of garbage in open space. They will not be penalized during this exercise but at a later stage, we intend to constitute ‘multi disciplinary task force’ to identify such people and levy penalty as prescribed under the law,” CCP Commissioner Sanjith Rodrigues said.
The CCP has identified 15-20 ‘black spots’ spread across the city where the people, majority of whom travel from the adjoining parts of the capital, dump mixed waste. These spots, Rodrigues said, will be manned by the guards during and post-campaign.
To ensure that the waste is not dumped at other locations, the CCP will propose setting up facilities at the entry points where people can hand over segregated waste.
“This is still at ideation stage. We will propose the concept at CCP council meeting… Once a facility is set up at entry points and/or St Inez, people can hand over their waste. Only segregated waste will be accepted,” he stated adding that non-segregation of waste is one of the challenges faced by CCP with five percent of the people not following the system.
Rodrigues went on to add that CCP’s another challenge is lack of space to dispose off debris and tree waste.
