PANJIM: Intensifying their protest, CCP Employees Union has threatened to boycott work during the eight-day International Film Festival of India (IFFI) beginning Sunday, if their demands are not met in the next two days.
Hundreds of workers are demonstrating since Wednesday pressing for their demands, including regularisation of services and hike in medical allowance.
The workers have ensured that their protest does not affect the common man and have continued with garbage collection.
Speaking to media persons, Union leader Ajitsingh Rane said, “We will not lift the garbage or clean the sites. We will hold dharna before City Corporation and will not resort to work.”
Workers claim that their demands are pending before the Mayor and Commissioner since July.
“We are asking to regularise the services of all those workers who are on contract basis for decades,” Rane said.
The other demand is a hike in medical allowance from Rs 4000 to Rs 7000 per month.
Meanwhile, CCP has termed the protest as illegal. Mayor Surendra Furtado said the workers cannot go on strike without serving notice.
“We have sent several reminders to the government to release pending dues under the 6th Pay Commission to the Corporation. However, the government is neglecting this. CCP has no funds to hike allowances,” he said.
For the past several years, CCP workers have cleaned the streets during IFFI.
On an average, the areas under the CCP jurisdiction generate 25-30 tonnes of garbage daily. During IFFI, garbage generated is an additional 5 to 7 tonnes per day.
