Facing the adverse agricultural conditions brought on by El Niño and erratic monsoon trends, the central government has set a conservative foodgrain production target of 373.93 million tonnes for the 2026-27 fiscal year. This target marks a modest reduction of 2.63 million tonnes compared to the estimated output achieved in 2025-26.Addressing a press conference during the National Agriculture Conference–Rabi Campaign 2026, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan provided a detailed breakdown of the adjustments.
He noted that while production reached an impressive 376.56 million tonnes during 2025-26 against a target of 362.60 million tonnes, the emerging climatic realities necessitated a cautious approach for the upcoming cycle. The newly established target for 2026-27 includes a robust rabi production goal of 177.72 million tonnes.
