MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao has come out in support of the Goa Forward Party (GFP) and their demand to have the statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira at the Goa Legislative Assembly complex.
Extending his support on behalf of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Churchill said that this would be a befitting tribute to the persons who struggled for an independent Goa.
Addressing a press conference in Margao, Churchill said, “Goa Forward made a statement that the statue of Dr Jack Sequeira, the father of opinion poll be installed at the Goa Assembly complex. I am happy that the endeavor of former MLA Radharao Gracias, myself and others at the Goa Assembly had taken in olden times is going to be fulfilled soon.”
Churchill and Radharao had introduced a Bill in the assembly for erecting a statue of Dr Jack Sequeira, but it did not get support as such was never passed. “Today, an alliance of Government in Goa says statue is required is a happy day for the people who died during opinion poll,” Churchill said.
“The NCP party will fully support the endeavour. The people who fought for independent Goa and who wanted statue of Dr Jack will get justice and will be at peace,” he added.
Churchill also informed that a Panchayat resolution by Benaulim Panchayat has been taken for installation of statue of Dr Jack Sequeira at Khareband.
“If someone doesn’t support the decision of having the statue of Dr Jack Sequeira it will be understood that they still support the merger of Goa in to Maharashtra,” Churchill said.
