CID admits drugs may have been stolen from coffers

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Crime Branch, which came in for severe criticism from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, has admitted that contrabands worth crores of rupees lying in the Anti Narcotic Cell mal khana (coffers) could have been stolen and pushed into the market.
Israeli drug dealer Atala on a video uploaded on youtube.com had confessed to having links with Shirodkar.
Atala also said that the then ANC inspector had allegedly stolen drugs from the court lockers and sold to the drug dealer.
“Since 2000, the drugs destruction committee has never carried out any destruction of drugs,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chandrakant Salgaonkar told the Additional Sessions Court in a written statement.
“If any of the drugs from the godown are found to be missing, the same should be recovered from Ashish Shirodkar,” he added.
It may be recalled that Herald had recently reported that no drugs have been returned from the court since 2006 for destruction.
Speaking to Herald, ANC Superintendent Veenu Bansal had said that once the ANC submits the chargesheet along with the seized substance, it is the court’s property.
“Only after the court returns the contrabands and issues directions to destroy it the ANC can go ahead,” Bansal had told Herald.
He, however said, since 2006 the ANC had neither received any contraband back nor the orders to destroy any.
