For a considerable period of time, Goan roads have been lying in a neglected state of affairs. Excavation work on road taken up by different agencies still continues at various strategic spots and hence space for movement of vehicular traffic has been reduced to the minimum.
Pedestrians too face great risk and danger. Filling up of excavated portions is not carried out satisfactorily and we notice uneven surface on road here and there. Such a tendency proves fatal for travellers, in particular pillion riders more so during late evening and night due to poor visibility on road.
A few months back, PWD Minister Ramakrishna alias Sudin Dhavalikar had stated that potholed roads in Goa would be repaired within a month or two. However of late, the Minister has stated that this task would be undertaken only after completion of the excavation work that is currently in progress at various locations. Indeed it would take more time for undertaking road repairs.
Till then there is every possibility of accidents taking place due to existing undesirable situation. This would certainly result in injuries and even loss of precious human lives. What is more irritating is that the potholed roads remained unattended even prior to major festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali and the Christmas festival (during 2017).
It is absolutely necessary for the concerned agencies to expedite excavation work and subsequent filling at the earliest so that repairing of road could be taken in hand on priority basis. Indeed, precious human lives should not be taken for granted but must receive protection at all times.
Let us hope that the PWD Minister would levy a sympathetic attitude towards this serious matter and initiate prompt favourable action in repairing the potholed/defective roads that have been lying neglected for long. Of course, timely favourable steps in this direction would go a long way in assuring a safe and comfortable journey to travellers at large. Swift action in this serious matter would be appreciated by one and all.
