The open stretch of the Miramar beach is an area of attraction to tourists and therefore it is the duty of our environmentalists to find an acceptable way to arrest the decreasing width of the Miramar beach which is seeing the sea coming inwards and accumulation of sand especially at the Pergola site. The increasing level of sand every year at the Pergola and surrounding areas has been parried by stacking of sand bags which is an eyesore (see photos).
The accumulation of sand could be due to strong winds as well as the force of the tidal waves and rising sea level. It may be emphasised here that to the right of the Pergola, the sand has been contained by planting Casuarina trees which has been effective.
In my younger days, I used to walk on the strip of sand right up to the area behind Children’s Park to Caranzalem. But now, behind and around the Children’s park no beach stretch is left but stones have replaced it. At the Pergola area I would suggest that a lightweight excavator be used to spread out the rising level of sand instead of allowing the present sand bags to be a barrier which will look very shabby in case the Smart City mission is accomplished.
This process will have to be resorted to again and again in the absence of any permanent solution. Considering that this is a beach access for tourists, this process may be repeated within certain intervals of time, may be once every two months or continuous days depending upon exigencies so as to restore the level of sand from original times in this area alternately cordoned off in phases.
Will our award-winning coastal-zone environmentalists wake up and take on the powers-that-be instead of burying their heads in the metaphorical sand?
