SANGUEM: The Sanguem town area is likely to face with the grave problem of non-collection of daily garbage, if the garbage collectors stick with their demand of non-collection of garbage with effect from October 1, for want of new garbage collection bins.

The garbage collectors working in the Sanguem Municipal Council area have bitterly complained of severe problems faced by them in collecting wet garbage in the town area. They informed despite many complaints to the authorities including the Sanguem Municipal Council, the authorities have failed in rectifying the problems faced by the garbage collectors.
The garbage collectors said that the garbage bins which they are presently using to collect wet garbage have developed cracks and are susceptible to leakages all along the road. This makes the garbage collectors hear lot of unwanted words from the general public for no fault of theirs.
Moreover, the garbage bins presently being used by the garbage collectors in the town area have become old and have no handles and wheels making it difficult for the garbage collectors to handle the bins smoothly and with ease.
Councillor Sanjay Raikar, who is wary of the problems faced by the garbage collectors, informed that the garbage collectors are practically facing severe problems while collecting garbage in the town area. However, the situation will be worse in the town area if the garbage collectors go on strike and stops collecting garbage from the municipal area.
Raikar said that he has already brought the issue to the notice of the Sanguem Municipal Council at the meeting held last month and has also given in writing the consequences the people in the town area would have to face if the garbage collectors stops collecting the garbage.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council Queiroz Cruz showed inability to get new bins from the Council funds on account of financial crunch the municipality is presently facing.
Cruz informed that the municipality is solely dependent on income generated from the shop rent, trade licences and house tax which is hardly sufficient to meet other regular spending of the Council.
Cruz informed that the existing bins were supplied by Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) some years back and they have now become old and worn out.
He said that GSUDA has also showed its inability to provide new bins at this juncture. The Council, however, will have to find ways in getting due replacement for the old and worn out garbage collection bins which the garbage collectors are presently using but are finding a lot of difficulties while collecting garbage on daily basis.
