Goa: Citizens for Democracy Goa has urged the Goa Government, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to conduct an independent engineering and road-safety audit of ongoing works on NH-66 at Cuncolim, Bambolim and other accident-prone locations.
Organisation representative Elvis Gomes said concerns had repeatedly been raised over road safety at these locations, including the narrow paved surface, absence of protective barriers, drainage structures located close to the carriageway and visibility issues at Cuncolim.

Gomes said an accident involving a car and a motorcycle on September 20 had once again highlighted the safety concerns surrounding the highway works.
He urged the authorities to take preventive measures rather than wait for serious accidents or fatalities before addressing potential hazards.
Citizens for Democracy Goa has also called for an independent technical assessment of the Cuncolim works by NIT Goa. Gomes questioned why expert safety assessments are undertaken only after serious accidents occur, stressing the need for preventive evaluation of road infrastructure.
