Speaking at the press conference, Elvis Gomes said that residents are already grappling with rising living costs due to higher electricity bills, LPG cylinder prices, and fuel costs. He alleged that although the installation of smart meters was initially presented as optional, the government is now compelling consumers to adopt the new system.
Amar Gaonkar questioned the reported expenditure of ₹890 crore on the smart meter project, claiming that the financial implications would ultimately be borne by the people of Goa. Referring to a recent statement by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant indicating that the scheme had been put on hold, Gaonkar sought greater clarity from the government and demanded that the project be withdrawn entirely.
The Citizens for Democracy representatives urged the state government to reconsider the implementation of the smart meter initiative and address the concerns raised by consumers regarding its potential economic impact.
The organisation maintained that greater transparency and public consultation are necessary before proceeding with any large-scale changes to the state’s electricity infrastructure.
