PANJIM: A petition signed by 7000 people from across the world demanding app-based taxi services in Goa was submitted to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday.
The initiative was taken up by various persons under the banner of ‘Citizens for Change’ (CGC), an NGO working on various issues the State is currently facing.
The petition has been signed by not only Goans but by people from all over India and from outside the country. The petition attracts importance as the government has failed to regulate the taxi business and also failed to introduce app-based taxi services under pressure of taxi operators.
Ola cabs, which was introduced in the State, had to stop operations after massive protests from the taxi lobby.
“We would like be very grateful to you if app-based taxis were introduced in Goa by your government. We would be happy to assist you in any way possible to make the above reality,” the petition to CM states.
Speaking to Herald one of its members, Mousinho Reis, said that cheaper commuting for all with no return fare will boost tourism in the State. “It will also reduce traffic congestion on the streets and cities as people will prefer travelling in cabs due to the pricing,” he said.
Joe Gomes, another member, said app-based cabs are safe and secure with easy GPS-based fare calculation. There are many advantages and benefits to the local as well as tourists using this service, he said. “The cashless payment with online receipt for every transaction would increase tax collection,” Gomes said.
The copy of the petition has also been submitted to Governor Mridula Sinha, Transport Minister, Tourism minister, TCP Minister as well as Calangute MLA Michael Lobo.
