PANJIM: In a bid to promote environment friendly conditions in the city, the State government is set to promote a rent-a-bicycle concept in Panjim. The project will kick off in the next six months.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the government is contemplating tying up with a private company to promote the rent-a-bicycle service in the city.
Parrikar said that environment-friendly conditions cannot be created overnight and the people will have to work for it. “We are encouraging buses running on bio-fuel. But it does not happen overnight because it requires a lot of capital cost. In same way the best way to reduce it further is to take to the bicycle,” he said.
The Chief Minister said that a private firm has demonstrated different kind of bicycles fitted with GPS, and would be setting up a facility to rent bikes for the people to ride within the city.
Parrikar said the bicycles would be fitted with GPS and the user will have to register with the company. He said the company will put up a bicycle stand every 300 metres where they can be parked.
He said the company is conducting a feasibility exercise for the project and bicycle stands would be set up in another five-six months.
