CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Mahadev Dessai resigned from the post on Tuesday, following a mutual agreement between the ruling group of councillors.
Dessai, who took over as the chairperson 10 months ago, along with a few other councillors travelled to Panjim to submit his resignation to the Director of Municipal Administration. Dessai also submitted a copy of his resignation to CMC Chief Officer Sudhin Natu.
It may be recalled that Dessai while addressing a news conference had informed that he would resign on Tuesday as per the commitment made while assuming the charge.
Dessai became the fourth chairperson to relinquish the post to enable the next person to taken over as CMC chairperson.
Rajbag-Tarir Councillor Ratnakar Dhuri was the first to take charge and resign after completing his 10-month tenure, followed by Kindlem Councillor Ramakant Naik Gaonkar who was in the chair for one-and-a-half years. However, there was some discontent when the next chairperson, Ajay Bhagat first resigned, but later withdrew his resignation. This compelled the councillors to vote him out, before Dessai took over as chairperson.
According to Dessai, if all the supporting councillors stick together, Nagarcem Councillor Suchita Naik Gaunkar could be the next head of the council.
