MARGAO: In a bid to arrest the declining sex ratio in the State, the district administration, South has solicited cooperation from its counterparts from across the State’s border to keep a track of Goans undergoing ultrasound checks for sex detection.
After tightening the screws on ultrasound clinics across the district, the administration has embarked upon a drive to check the menace of sex detection. “We have decided to have an integrated approach by coordinating with the neighbouring states to check illegal sex detection,” remarked District Collector N D Agrawal.
He said letters have been sent to the district Collectors of neighbouring Karnatka, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur and Belgaum to provide details of form “F” of people of Goa undergoing ultrasound checks in these districts.
“This drive is only a precautionary measure the district administration has taken to ensure complete stop to sex detection. We have not come across any complaints are moving out of the state for sex detection, but the measure is only precautionary in nature,” Agrawal said.
Additional Director, Deepali Naik told Herald that the administration has tightened the screws on ultrasound clinics operating in the state under the Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994. “Inquiries carried out by the district administration has revealed that around 70 ultrasound clinics were registered in the district, but only around 38 clinics were factually operating. We have sought details of all the clinics and their modes of operation”, she said, adding “We will wait for the neighbouring states to provided information on sex detections by Goan as that would give insight to the problem”.
Meanwhile, the district administration is bracing to launch a concerted drive to spread awareness on saving the girl child. “We have sought cooperation of the cable operators and TV channels to take the ongoing campaign forward. The declining sex ration is indeed a matter for concern,” he said.
