PANJIM: The District Collectors are expected to issue a public notice inviting claims and objections into cases of Portuguese nationality and registration of births in Portugal.
Sources told Herald that the notices are expected to be published within eight days and the public will get 90 days to file their applications and objections. The development comes after the Home and Law Departments have given a green signal for issuing the public notice.
“A public notice will be published in the coming days, mostly in the next eight days. Any application, claim and/or objection pertaining to the case will have to be filed in 90 days,” revealed the source from the government.
The public hearing will begin thereafter.
It will be the jurisdiction of collectors to hear the matter henceforth, he said. It is learnt that around 40,000 people have registered their births in Portugal.
The Ministry of Home Affairs on November 22, 2016 had empowered District Collectors to inquire into the acquisition of citizenship of another country and making recommendations to the Centre.
The District Collectors in Goa had then put up a proposal before the State government to issue a public notice, mid-this year.
The collectors have been asked to submit report on each case to the Centre.
