MARGAO: A house in Colva belonging to the Fernandes family and situated near the Colva Church was gutted in a fire in the wee hours of Saturday. The sleeping family immediately escaped after the neighbours alerted them.

All the belongings of the family including children’s school books, clothes, jewellery, household appliances and furniture like TV, fridge, beds, tables as well as their two bikes were gutted in the fire. The family has suspected foul play and have lamented that they have not only lost everything, but their livelihoods are affected too. The family hopes the government will help them rebuild their lives.
The cause of the fire is yet to be identified, but prima facie, the fire brigade staff think it started from the exterior of the house as that portion appears to have suffered most damage. The two vehicles parked outside the house were gutted as well. Two fire tenders had to be called in to douse the massive blaze. The fire brigade staff said they had reached the site as soon as they got the call and from what they saw, the fire started in the roof and rafters and further spread inside the house. No injuries were reported.
Fire officer R.D Khutker said the Electricity Department will ascertain the cause of the fire. “We will write a letter to the Power Department to find out the cause of the fire,” he said.
