MARGAO: The traditional Colva fishermen (ramponkars) were in a joyous mood after netting a bumper catch of solar shrimps on Monday, which exceeded their expectations.
The fishermen explained that traditionally, the last week of July till the first or second week of August is when they try to catch solar shrimps.
The fishermen added that the weather conditions appear to be very good which according to them means there will be a good fishing season this year. They further praised God for providing them with such a big catch on Monday.
“We had some tough times earlier. Our nets were in bad shape. Our fellow fishermen were not doing well. However, in all my time as a fisherman, we have not caught such a big catch before. This is more than enough for all of us, said one of the senior fishermen.
They added that this week is very important to them because once the fishing ban is lifted on August 1 and the big trawlers are allowed to venture into the sea, they harvest almost all of the solar shrimps as well as other fish in the sea, leaving nothing behind for the traditional ramponkars who have small boats.
