Commotion at Macazana gram sabha forces police intervention

Police had to intervene at the gram sabha meeting of Macazana village panchayat on Sunday over a discussion on the implementation of NREG scheme.
Sarpanch Mariano D’Costa said commotion ensued when a member charged towards him during discussions on NREG scheme, evoking angry reactions from other members of the gram sabha. The situation was brought under control following the intervention of the police.
The gram sabha also adopted a resolution to write to the Maina Curtorim police to remove a tenanted family from the village following assault on a local resident. The gram sabha served a seven days deadline to the police to inquire into the assault case and take necessary action.
In another resolution, the gram sabha also demanded a CBI inquiry into the kerosene business carried out by a Panch member on grounds that no taxes are being paid to the panchayat body.
The sarpanch said the gram sabha members demanded to know the kerosene quota received by the kerosene dealer. They further demanded whether the kerosene business is being carried out with NOC from the fire services. After much discussions, the members demanded that the CBI inquire into the matter.
The gram sabha members also discussed the issue of NREG scheme, with the sarpanch saying that it has been decided not to take works of the Tenants Association under the scheme in future.
