CANACONA: Refuting allegations that he is not taking any steps to improve health facilities in the taluka, Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar stated that the State government is already seized of the matter and is seriously thinking to upgrade Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) to a sub-district hospital.
“I am equally seized about the poor health care facilities in Canacona,” stated Tawadkar when informed that residents are making allegations against him for taking up the issue in the same manner he used fight for it when he was the MLA in the opposition.
Tawadkar further said due to the previous government’s short-sightedness, almost all the government hospitals in the State are suffering from medical staff crunch, including doctors and nurses.
“The previous government never did proper justice by not making proper appointments of doctors and nurses, due to which Canacona CHC also constantly remains understaffed.”
“Government will make these amendments and even nurses will be appointed. Our government has made it compulsory to the freshers, who graduate from GMC, to work in rural health centres,” he said.
“By June, there won’t be any shortage of doctors in CHC. We are also trying to frame rules to rotate doctors on bi-monthly basis, as many doctors do not want to work in rural areas for years together,” he added.
“Since community hospital norms have limitations, I have a plan to upgrade Canacona CHC to a sub-district hospital and government will be able to improve health care in Canacona if it is upgraded,” assured Tawadkar.
When some scribes demanded that the chief minister should visit the CHC to know the status of facilities, Tawadkar said: “Then it would mean I am incapable in Canacona.”
