Close on the heels of BJP extending support to some aspirants contesting the municipal elections, Congress Party has decided to support 13 candidates, who are contesting the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) election.
Briefing press persons, Mapusa Congress Block President Vijay Bhike said the Congress party has decided to support Roohi Patre (Ward 1), Minority Cell of Mapusa Chairman Firojkhan Patahan (Ward 2), Michael Carasco (Ward 3), Subhash Kalangutker (Ward 5), Roopa Bhakta (Ward 6), Prakash Bhivset (Ward 7), Ilma Braganza (Ward 8), Ashish Shirodker (Ward 9), Neeta Gurudas Natekar (Ward 10), Conceicao Dias (Ward 11), Devki Moraskar (Ward 12), Ashok Govekar (Ward 13) and Sheetal Walke (Ward 14).
Interestingly, Ilma Braganza and Prakash Bhivset enjoy support from both BJP and the Congress party.
“Out of the 13, at least 10 candidates will emerge victorious,” said Bhike.
“The Congress has not offered support to any candidate from Wards 4 and 15 nor to Subhash Narvekar, who is contesting from Ward 2,” stated Bhike.
With regard to Subhash Narvekar, Bhike said Narvekar had contested the last assembly election in 2007 on the JD (S) ticket against the alliance candidate Ryan Braganza.
“Narvekar has still not joined the Congress party and he still continues to be in JD (S). Hence, Congress cannot support him,” informed Bhike.
Now with both, BJP and Congress, having declared its support to the candidates contesting the municipal election, the campaigning will assume new dimensions and it will be a straight fight between BJP and Congress to gain power and rule Mapusa Municipal Council.
