PANJIM: While accusing the ruling BJP party of betraying the people of Goa on the promise of Special Status, the Congress on Thursday demanded resignation of Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, over his statement that the special status is like a “mirage”.
Addressing media persons, Congress spokesperson Adv Yatish Naik alleged that the statement of Chief Minister is the biggest U-turn of the government, even as the State Legislative Assembly had passed an unanimous resolution to demand for Special Status to Goa under Article 371 of the Constitution before the Centre.
“Prior to assembly and Lok sabha elections, BJP promised people to grant special status and this promise was probably one of the reason why voters gave clear mandate to BJP. But now people feel betrayed.”
Congress has demanded resignation of Chief Minister and has also questioned the silence of the cabinet Minister Alina Saldanha on the issue, who always claimed to follow her late husband footsteps.
“BJP is not concerned about people’s aspirations people but concerned about destroying the precious land. They are advocating polices like marinas, sea plane, to destroy its identity. These are the projects that are strongly opposed by the people,” Naik said.
During a media briefing over his one year completion in chair, Parsekar on Wednesday categorically ruled out the possibility of Goa getting a special status from the Centre. He said that Special status from the Centre is like a mirage and he would not like to chase it.
