MARGAO: A major fire broke out at the Bank of India, Margao branch premises on Thursday night.
According to Margao fire officials, they got a call from a bystander at 11.15 pm informing that smoke was billowing out of the first floor of the building. Fire personnel rushed to the site with a fire tender, and as the fire was getting out of control, requested another tender. The fire was finally
contained at 1 am.
Officer-on-duty Gil Souza informed that the firefighters had to break windows to enter the premises and that the first floor, which houses the bank’s NRI department, has been gutted.
The fire, which broke out in the middle of the town, exposes the Margao Municipal Council’s failure to set up an overhead tank that would make the town’s fire hydrants functional and allow the fire brigade to respond to emergencies more efficiently.
