PANJIM: The Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Goa Police on Monday suspended its constable, identified as one Jitendra Kambli, in connection with the murder of Nigerian national Obado Uzoma Simeon, whose stabbed body was found at Parra on October 31.
ANC SP Kartik Kashyap, when contacted by Herald, confirmed the suspension but declined to disclose any further details.
Nonetheless, sources at Goa Police headquarters said that an internal inquiry revealed prima facie evidence against the erring constable.
“Kambli was in constant touch with the suspected killers of Simeon, before and after the fatal attack. We decided that he should be kept away from the ANC team and the police force, until the completion of the departmental enquiry,” the source said.
Herald had reported that the ANC chief was conducting an inquiry against Kambli following allegations that he leaked police information to the Chapora criminal gang, two of whose members are arrested by Mapusa police on murder charges.
The report’s findings pointed out that the constable’s alleged links with the criminals and suspected drug peddlers has come as a severe blow to the police, especially the ANC which has been making efforts to overcome its dubious past. Nearly a dozen former ANC officials including a police inspector and two sub inspectors are under suspension after their alleged links with the drug mafia was exposed in 2010.
