Cops fail to curb errant parking of trucks at Ponda junction

Despite several fatal accidents at the junction, traffic police are yet to clear the trucks that park along the road at Amigos Junction

PONDA: The traffic police have failed to take cognizance of haphazard parking of trucks on both sides of the road, which has resulted in several accidents, some even fatal, at Amigos Junction.
In fact, a fatal accident occurred four days ago at this junction, as several truckers carelessly park their vehicles on both sides of the road and obstruct view of motorists coming from either side of the road, which has over the years become a motorists’ nightmare.
Locals have blamed the lethargic attitude and carelessness of traffic police to maintain traffic order at the junction, due to ongoing road-widening and flyover work.
Locals are surprised that even after raising their voice on several occasions and recently at the Curti gram sabha, the traffic police have turned a blind eye to this problem.
Barely four days ago a biker from Mardol was killed and the pillion grievously injured when a truck dashed against the bike, when it was wrongly overtaking from the left.
Durbhat Adpoi Agapur panch Mashal Adpoikar said he regularly uses this road and always notices that the traffic police seldom stand at the junction, but instead stand far away with their patrolling vehicle and issue challans to violators.
They are not bothered about accidents and safety at the junction, he said, adding that in order to curb accidents, police must clear the dangerously-parked trucks near the junction, where a petrol pump is located.
It may be noted that the important junction, connects roads to Belgaum, Ponda, Panjim and Margao.
