MARGAO: The first of its kind in Goa, ‘Covid box’ and a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) was put to use at Hospicio, Margao on Thursday. This is an effort of the Medical Superintendent of Hospicio Dr Ira Almeida to make the hospital and work safer for the medical staff.

The Covid cubicle arrangement has been made in Hospicio which is one of its kinds in Goa. The box has been made using a design from the internet. The box is in use in Kerala and South Korea, too.
“It is a box in which we have put a see through acrylic sheet and have made openings for hand gloves which can be worn right up to the shoulder. A stethoscope also can pass through the sheet for testing patients,” Dr Ira Almeida explained.
The patient remains on one side of the sheet and hence there is less chance of transmission of the virus during the examination of the patient. It can be used for examination and future collection of samples.
Dr Almeida said that they are going to use it in the Covid/respiratory OPDs. “Anybody coming with the history of travel or respiratory illness will be tested through this facility. There are four OPDs dedicated to Covid-19 now,” she said.
“Since the testing is going to be up, this will be a very fruitful gadget which is the first in any Goan Hospital and it will be safe for the health workers (and meet) our commitment to keep our workers safe at all times,” she said.
Hospicio has also procured a PAPR which is a suit for attending patients who are not mobile and are in other facilities across the Hospicio Jurisdiction.
The Hospicio has crowd funded the PAPR suit and as a lot of doctors and well wishers donated for the various apparatus for safety of medical workers from the virus.
