PONDA: In a crackdown on traffic violators, the Ponda Traffic Cell on Thursday morning issued challans to motorists for parking their vehicles in the “no parking zone” in front of the Ponda fire station.
The crackdown comes in the wake of several traffic violations reported in the town.
Traffic policemen also clamped several vehicles parked along the roadside and in front of the Ponda Fire Services.
However, despite clamping the vehicles, buses, cars and two wheelers were found parked at the said site in the evening thereby violating the traffic rules and ignoring the “No Parking” signboards.
It may be recalled that the district Collector recently passed an order prohibiting parking opposite fire station road and accordingly “No Parking” signboards were installed.
However, traffic violations seem to be the order of the day at the site. The vehicles parked in the no parking zone are an open invitation for the accidents as they pose a threat to the lives of people.
After booking several vehicle owners for traffic violations, PSI Traffic, A M Rane said, “We would continue our mission to control traffic violations. Vehicles are parked throughout the day as workers work in shift at industrial estate.
They park their vehicles in the “No Parking” zone. It becomes difficult for us to act against them.”
“However, we will strictly implement traffic rules and will clamp their vehicles and send challans to their residences. We will photograph their vehicles for traffic violations so as to keep a record to avoid controversies and cases against the traffic cell,” he added.
The clampdown on traffic violations follows sever complaints from several Ponda residents including NGOs demanding action against unauthorised parking, which is rampant in the town.
Around nine two-wheelers were clamped for unauthorised parking and several vehicles parked in the no parking zone were booked for offences under the MV Act as they could not be clamped due to shortage of clamps, Rane added.
